PhD Studentship: The Impact of Introduced Signal Crayfish on Freshwater
Systems in Scotland
The University of Glasgow and the Clyde River Foundation are seeking a
dynamic, highly self-motivated graduate for a research studentship to
investigate the extent, mechanisms, processes and impacts of invasion of
the North American Signal Crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, in
Scotland. The programme of research will assess the distribution and
status of signal crayfish in Scotland, and identify practical action
towards eradication and/or containment of the species.
The signal crayfish is one of six high-profile non-native species posing a
threat to native biodiversity in Scotland and this project is a
collaboration between Scottish Natural Heritage, the Clyde River
Foundation, the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment,
and the United Clyde Angling Protective Association Ltd. The successful
candidate would expect to develop significant knowledge and skills in
comparative field trials, GIS, habitat assessment, field ecology, impact
assessment, statistical analysis of complex data and a strong
theoretical knowledge of non-native species invasion processes.
Candidates are required to have at least an upper second class degree in
a biological, biomedical or veterinary science. A driving licence with 2
years driving experience is essential.
The position which will be for 3 years leading towards the award of a Ph.D. is
only open to candidates from within the EU. The student stipend will be
£12,300 p.a.
